walk on the water

Thursday, July 18, 2013

I'm reading the book of Matthew right now. I forget how powerful it is. It's like every section is so full of wisdom I can think about it all day.

This morning I opened up to the subtitle "Jesus Walks on the Water"... and my eyes immediately welled up with tears. Weird. What?!
I guess I really needed to be reassured of Christ's power. I think so often I fail to really fully believe just how powerful the Lord is. It's like in the back of my mind I know intellectually that he performed all sorts of miracles during his lifetime (and after), but for some reason I limit His power in my life and the lives of those around me today.

Why do I do this?
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." - Hebrews 13:8
So why can't He still perform miracles? He can. And He does.

Not only did Jesus walk on the water, Peter did, too. WE can, too. When Jesus called Peter to step out of the boat and onto the water, Peter did.
"Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord save me!'" - Matthew 14:29-30
Peter saw the wind and got scared. He doubted. And he immediately started to sink. When there is wind in our lives, what do we do? Do we get scared and doubt and lose faith? Or do we keep our eyes set on Jesus, taking one step at a time toward Him?
The waters won't always be calm and still. In fact, more often that not, they won't be. But just because the waters are rough, doesn't mean we can't cross them. Just because we are standing in the middle of the ocean, doesn't mean we're walking alone.

All we have to do is look up. Christ is there. With His outstretched hand.
My nephew reaching for my sister's outstretched hand. Beautiful.
If we look up. If we reach out. We can walk on the water.
